Welcome to MopaMopa
The rooster´s cry awakens the men of extraordinary strong jaws. It is time to start chewing the resin that decorates the most valuable articles of the Quillasinga tribe; all in a wide variety of natural colors to frighten the bad spirit, Queche. This happened 1000 years ago.
Five centuries later, after our land was invaded and the tribe had been conquered, the best of our art went
first to the Inca´s land and later with the Spanish to Europe. Our feelings are tied to the past and we continue to express them through this millennarian art.
Today, just like yesterday, we the sons of the eight-pointed sun, continue to decorate these artistic articles using the same process, which brings good luck to us both. Stop in and see these beatuiful pieces of the past for yourself.
The Mopa Mopa artwork creation process

The bud of Mopa-Mopa tree
|

The buds are boiled in water |

The buds become a resin
which looks like a kind of gum
|

The artisans add color to the resin
|

The artisans stretch it with
mouth and hands
|

They apply the resin on the wood
and make designs with a knife
|
THIS PROCESS HAS BEEN USED OVER HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO. IT WAS DESCRIBED BY THE SPANIARD CONQUERORS (HERNAN PEREZ DE QUEZADA 1543) AND CONSERVED UNTIL OUR GENERATION
